Inspiration
Having had the AHA's NHC Gold Medal recipes be published this week in Zymurgy, I knew it was time to brew a series of these award winning recipes. My hope is to learn about the strengths of these recipes - as many of the recipe formulations are quite different from what I usually brew. It should be nice to see how their techniques compare to what I've been working on in my Iteration Series.
This beer became "Smokey Joe's" Pale Ale, served along with Dear Opa (Iteration V) on New Years. I had the malt, I picked up the easiest hops to work with (a blend of some of the best) and knocked this out to experiment with the malt bill, more than anything.

Tasted December 27th: Not much nose beyond a slight bready, light caramel and nut flavour. Flavour is full bodied, round bready, quite rich nutty. Hops are difficult to detect beyond being piney, and are mainly covered by the malt. The bitterness is actually better than I had thought it would be. Not quite so present. Is doing the same thing every raw beer does.. tastes sweet, then tastes too bitter and at times yeasty. Time should bring these all together. Overall body is quite round, though. This could be to do with the water treatments. Still muddy appearance.
Beer improved a lot over the week. I also opted for a second in-keg dry hop, which really added that hoppy nose I was missing before. Not much to say about this other than it tasted like a Pale Ale that wished it could be an Amber Ale, or possible some kind of citrusy nut. This was also served on New Years, and got drank in under an hour.
